Description

Busts of José Martí (1853-1895) – one of Cuba’s greatest writers and the intellectual father of Cuba’s independence from Spain, as well as The Cuban Revolution – proliferate throughout Cuba. The song, “Guantanamera,” is based upon his poem, “Yo soy un hombre sincero.” A famous line of that poem is: “Arte soy entre las artes y en los montes, monte soy.” This particular bust is from the famed art alley of Havana, known as El Callejón de Hamel.
