Description

The Reference area of Westbrook College's Abplanalp Library is the former 1900 McArthur Gymnasium. This ca. 1990 colored photograph shows the original wooden trusses which were designed in 1900 by architect Francis Fassett to resemble the inside ribs of a ship's hull. In 1985 when the McArthur Gymnasium was renovated and new construction was added to design the Abplanalp Library, architect Kenneth MacLean followed many of the details of Fassett's gym. The Palladium window, "running track" mezzanine, picture window gym entrance, and exposed wooden beams were highlighted.

Ca. 1990 the Abplanalp Library Reference area was furnished with metal reference book shelving with wooden end panels and CD-ROM towers, computer workstations and printers with perforated continuous feed printer paper. The card catalog was divided into sections and placed at the far end of the Reference area. A corner of the Reference desk is just visible in the lower right hand corner of the photo.
