Abstract
On November 13, 2024, MWWC Archivist Jefferson Navicky conducted an interview with poet, teacher, and publisher Beatrix Gates in her house in Brooksville, Maine.
During the interview, Gates talks about the beginnings of Granite Press and her start as a poet, as well as the rich community that sprang up around Granite Press. She also talks at length about the trials and tribulations of publishing the seminal anthology IXOK AMAR GO: Central American Women Poets for Peace (Granite Press 1987; ed. Zoe Anglesey). Gates talks about the IRS audit following the anthology’s publication that lead to the closure of Granite Press, as well as how she reconnected with poetry and what she did after the press closed. Gates ends the interview with advice she would give to young people who want to start a poetry press.
