Who Can Submit?
Members of the UNE Community (students, faculty, staff, alumni) and other practitioners of narrative medicine may submit an original work to be considered for publication in Akesis provided they own the copyright to the work being submitted or are authorized by the copyright owner or owners to submit the work. Authors/creators are generally the initial owners of the copyrights to their works; if the author(s)/creator(s) have assigned copyright of their work to someone else, they should gain permission from the copyright owner to submit their work to Akesis, and should include a copy of that permission with their submission. As further described in our submission agreement (the Submission Agreement), in consideration for publication of the work, the authors assign to DUNE: DigitalUNE the non-exclusive right to publish and distribute the work via DUNE: DigitalUNE and the right to convert the work to any medium or format necessary for the purpose of long-term preservation. Authors also agree to refrain from posting their submission to social media until such time as it is either published in Akesis or they are notified that it will not be published in Akesis.
General Submission and Format Requirements
Works accepted for consideration: The editors of Akesis will consider works in the form of nonfiction, fiction, poetry, art (photography, drawings, paintings, etc.), and audio/visual media. All submissions should relate to the practice of narrative medicine, and also to the issue-specific prompt for which the work is submitted (unless otherwise indicated in the call for submissions). Literary works should not exceed 3 pages or 1,500 words. Images should be high quality (at least 300 ppi, preferably more); both grayscale and color works are acceptable. One submission per person per issue will be accepted for consideration.
Acceptable formats include: .doc, .docx, or .rtf for literary works; .jpg, .tiff, or .png for images; .mp3 or .mp4 for audio and visual works.
Originality: Submitted works must be the original work of the author(s). By submitting material to Akesis, the author is stipulating that the material is not currently under review at another journal (electronic or print) or, if under review simultaneously at Akesis and another journal, that the other journal (electronic or print) allows simultaneous publication. If previously published*, author(s) should include with their Akesis submission verification that the prior publisher allows simultaneous publication. (*Please note: "publication" in a working-paper series does not constitute prior publication.) The author(s) also agrees to refrain from posting their submission to social media until such time as it is either published in Akesis or they are notified that it will not be published in Akesis. If the submission has been posted to social media prior to submission, the author(s) will notify the Akesis editors. If you have concerns about the submission terms for Akesis, please contact the editors.
How to Submit
Submission to Akesis requires the creation of (or login to) a free DUNE: DigitalUNE user account. Clicking Submit Work from the Akesis sidebar will prompt this account creation/log in. (UNE community members please note: Use of your UNE email is encouraged during creation of your account, but DUNE: DigitalUNE accounts are not linked to the UNE single sign-on.) Once logged in to your user account, you will be prompted to:
- Read and accept the Submission Agreement
- Provide information about yourself
- Provide information about any authors (an option to publish anonymously will be available)
- Describe and upload your work and any related items*
*Please be sure you have the following items before you begin the submission process: Title of work, description of work (to help readers understand its context), keywords for your work (optional), and your work in one of the accepted formats (.doc, .docx, or .rtf for literary works; .jpg, .tiff, or .png for images; .mp3 or .mp4 for audio and visual works).
What to Expect After Submission
Shortly after submitting a work to Akesis, you will receive an email confirming receipt of your submission. Each work submitted will undergo the Journal's editorial decision process, including identification of the work's relation to the Journal's mission and vision, and relation to the prompt for the particular issue for which the work was submitted. The Journal is not under any obligation to publish a submitted work. The Editors will send you notices at the email address associated with your account.
Your completion of the Submission Agreement allows the Journal to expedite the publishing process and circulate the Work to the fullest extent if the Journal agrees to publish your Work. This is because, upon publication, you have assigned the following automatically to the publisher: the non-exclusive right to publish and distribute the Work via DUNE: DigitalUNE and the right to convert the Work to any medium or format necessary for the purpose of long-term preservation.
