Description
This project employs a patient-centered framework to examine the clinical, environmental, and social determinants contributing to poorly controlled asthma in a 9-year-old girl from rural Maine. Despite adherence to inhaled corticosteroid and bronchodilator therapy, symptoms persist due to exposure to mold, dust, and wood smoke, compounded by substandard housing, rural isolation, and limited access to specialty care. Socioeconomic barriers, including transportation and financial constraints, further impede disease management. Proposed interventions target environmental remediation, improved specialty access, and school-based asthma education to enhance self-management. This analysis underscores the importance of integrating social and environmental determinants into pediatric asthma care to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities in rural populations.
