Description
The connection of periodontal disease and systemic erythematous lupus connects a multitude of inflammation symptoms. The body is plagued with consistent states of inflammation due to the autoimmune defense against the body's healthy tissues. This coincides with the inflammatory response produced by periodontal diseases. Studies indicate a strong correlation between the presence of periodontal disease in individuals suffering from SLE. Those with lupus are more likely to also have a greater incidence of oral characteristics that contribute to periodontal disease. Individuals with SLE have an increased risk of developing periodontal diseases and associated characteristics; however, those suffering from said oral complications can maintain periodontal health with increased preventative care and adequate home care. The exacerbated host response causes an abnormal prevalence of chronic inflammation in the periodontium, triggering a more significant immune response and causing irreversible tissue destruction, resulting in greater susceptibility to disease and infection.
