Description

Ms. Martinez is a 35-year-old postpartum Latina woman and middle school Spanish teacher diagnosed with osteosarcoma of the right humerus after a prolonged period of misdiagnosis. Through a patient-centered framework, we examine the multifaceted biological, psychosocial, environmental, and socioeconomic factors impacting her diagnosis, treatment, and overall well-being. Ms. Martinez faces unique challenges as a single mother of two young children, navigating her cancer diagnosis while managing caregiving responsibilities, limited English proficiency, unstable housing, and financial insecurity. Her delayed diagnosis, functional impairment, and emotional burden are further compounded by minimal familial support and barriers within the healthcare system. The framework highlights the importance of a comprehensive, multidisciplinary intervention strategy that includes bilingual healthcare navigation, physical therapy, mental health resources, financial and employment assistance, and community-based support. The goal is to provide holistic, culturally sensitive care that addresses the broader determinants of health to improve Ms. Martinez’s outcomes and quality of life during her cancer journey.
