About MWWC
Descriptive panel detailing the history of the Maine Women Writers Collection.
Text on panel: "The Maine Women Writers Collection was founded in 1959 by Grace Dow and Dorothy Healy to preserve and make available the writings of Maine women who had achieved literary recognition. Geographically, our holdings concern the state of Maine; Dawnland, the traditional territory of Wabanaki people; and the northern New England region. We collect the work of anyone who identifies as female, femme, transfeminine, or non-binary.
Our collections document Maine women’s engagement with local, regional, national and global concerns, including the suffrage and women’s movements, environmentalism, health and sexuality, family culture, women’s education, spiritualism, and Maine and New England history. The Collection has strong holdings in children’s literature and nature writing; it also preserves the records of women’s organizations. Researchers will find resources documenting the lives of everyday women and women’s cultural production. We have extensive holdings of diaries, travel journals, scrapbooks, albums, letters, photographs and memorabilia. Our collection of artists’ books includes work by Rebecca Goodale and Martha A. Hall, among others."
Created for the 60th anniversary exhibit on display in the Portland Campus library in 2019.
