Ann Wales, D.O. Collection

Anne L. Wales, D.O. was born in 1904 in Rhode Island. She first encountered osteopathy when her mother was trampled by a horse and was treated by a local osteopath. In 1922 Dr. Wales enrolled in the American School of Osteopathy in Kirksville, MO and later transferred to the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine where she graduated in 1926 and returned to Rhode Island to practice. In 1942 Dr. Wales and her husband, Dr. Chester Handy, began studying with Dr. William Sutherland, the father of cranial therapy. Dr. Wales then dedicated her professional life to learning, teaching, promoting and practicing Cranial Osteopathy. Dr. Wales retired in 1981 but continued to teach on occasion. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s students of osteopathy sought her out for training and in 1996 created the “A. Still-Sutherland Study Group.” Dr. Wales also contributed to the publication of a collection of Dr. Sutherland’s writings, Contributions of Thought as well as her own book on Dr. Sutherland’s teachings, Teachings in the Science of Osteopathy. Dr. Wales continued to teach until her death at 101 in 2005.
