Description

This ca.1897 sepia toned photograph, labeled on the back "Fred Cousens at Westbrook Seminary," was a gift to the Westbrook College History Collection from the faculty and students of HIS 337: Women of Westbrook College, Fall 2008. Although Fred William Cousins (Sanford) is listed as a Scientific Course graduate in the 1896-97 Catalogue of the Officers and Students of Westbrook Seminary, for the Academic Year Ending June 25, 1897, entries within the Westbrook Seminary & Female College Registrar & Rank Book, 1878-1905, indicate he took courses at Westbrook Seminary from Jan 2, 1895 through March 25, 1898.

Fred Cousens/Cousins is sitting at a table in the corner of a Goddard Hall dormitory room. On the table are a lamp with pleated shade, books and an ink well. Cabinet cards and photographs line the chair rail; and a painting reproduction, calendar and various ephemera are mounted on the plaster walls above the chair rail. Fred holds an open book with his right hand and points with his left index finger to a page within the book.
