Two Westbrook Junior College dental hygiene students, Dianne Ambrose and Jane Baker, pose with pioneer dental hygienist, Irene O'Connor Navarre, in this black and white photograph labeled Press Herald and stamped Feb 15 1965 on the back. The three names, also, are written in pencil, on the back of the photo. The two young women wear white dress uniforms and white caps. Ms. Navarre wears a black academic robe and holds a mortar board cap in her hand.
Irene O'Connor Navarre graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1938 and through her teaching, practice, service, and policy-changing roles had a significant impact in advancing the profession of dental hygiene. She worked with dental hygiene associations to change the scope of practice to include subgingival scaling; was instrumental in starting the New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada Dental Hygienists' Associations; and was active in the American Dental Hygienists' Association. (“Spotlight on a Pioneer Dental Hygienist” by Christine Nathe, RDH, MS) Navarre was president of ADHA in 1964-65, when she visited Westbrook Junior College.
