Description
In the photograph Mrs. Cynthia “Cindy” Walsh and her husband Tom have a coffee break in their home. As Cynthia LaRou, she graduated from Westbrook Junior College in 1968 with an associates degree in Applied Science. A Maine native, she wanted to remain in her home state but to pursue her dream of a career in retailing, she saw a move to Boston as her only course of action to get her Bachelors of Science degree. Her husband was still at University of Maine finishing his degree in Business Administration. She heard her college president on a local news program speaking about “a college without walls” at Westbrook called “Two Plus You”. "He said that a Westbrook graduate could go on to accumulate credits from one or more institutions in this country or abroad without any time limit, and after meeting the requirements, return to Westbrook to receive a bachelors degree. Cindy was the first to enroll." The photograph and an article, quoted from in the description above, appeared in the Christian Science Monitor on April 10, 1971.
