A late 1860s, early 1870s carte de visite by J. H. Lamson, Photographer, Middle Street, Portland, Maine, has the following written on the back: "Mrs Ella C. (Quimby) Hawes." Ella wears a short black lace mantilla veil on the back of her dark hair and a black lace mantilla shawl over her shoulders. A white butterfly pin holds her veil in place. Her hair is braided and coiled on the top of her head and spit curls frame her forehead. White or ivory earrings dangle from her ears and white lace circles her throat.
